If you want to get and keep lots of American Goldfinches we suggest not relying on Nyjer seed from Africa alone...instead use our Special Finch Blend which incorporates oily crushed fine sunflower chips into the Nyjer.  Sunflowers are the natural food of the American Goldfinch and unlike Nyjer seed, will not soak up moisture from humid condition or rain. Nyjer is old when it arrives here from places like Ethiopia and Somalia and could hardly be this birds natural food since it's an American Goldfinch. We think thistle, which Nyjer really isn't, is associated with finches because of the tendency for them to use the thistle "feathers" in nest building.  Goldfinches are a flock bird and would like to stay together while feeding so if you'd like to see lots of them use feeders with lots of feeding ports.

American Goldfinches in the upper Midwest like here in Minnesota, start turning into their yellow breeding colors in Spring, nest in mid Summer, then lose most of the bright yellow in Fall. Unlike most birds, the American Goldfinch doesn't breed in the Spring but seems to prefer raising they young when food is much more plentiful.  Our finch feeders are made by:
